Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Mood board, encapsulating the mood of the video and other ancillary texts
We originally wanted the video to have a quite relaxed mood, to juxtapose the fast pace of the song and the shots. The dock and sea background indicates the tranquil scenery of the swimming pool, and South End. The repeated Yin-Yang represents the balance and harmony, and the opposite styles of music that created the song (slow, Indie song into a fast remix), but also the idea that each band member is distinctly different in their style and attitude, which is also shown in the images of Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé, and, Nina Nesbitt.

These GIFs show the connection within the music video, within the swimming pool, colour scheme,  the selection of shots in South End in conjunction with the swimming pool shots. The final GIF shows a long performance shot of Emma in the studio. They show the selection of filters we use across our ancillary texts, as well as our locations and costumes.

Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Primary Audience (13-15) Secondary Audience (17-20) Tertiary Audience (23+)

We created a survey based on aspects of our music video, Digipak, and over all way we presented a new artist. In order to get a range of answers we created a survey that could be answered by a range of people with different interests, along with specific questions about our work.

I asked other students around 17 - 21 along with adults ranging from 30 - 55 to get a variety of answers.

Above is a short video of 3 girls from each category of audiences answering questions about our music video. We were happy to find that each audience felt that the Hybrid Beauty band members could relate in some way to their age group, but like our Tertiary Audience said, they feel that they relate to their target audience more. Due to this, they all felt that they would look into the group more to find out new information about them and expand their knowledge.

Our Audiences:

Using Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory, I analysed the way in which we appealed to our target audience. In 1974, Blumler and Katz created a theory stating the reasons how people consume different forms of Media. This consists of 4 Theory's coming under the titles of Entertainment, Information, Personal Relationships and Personal Identity.

We then did a survey for our Primary Audience (13-15), our Secondary Audience (17-20), and our Tertiary Audience (23+). We came up with a range of questions that could be asked to all three audiences so that we could get a range of answers to see if our theory applied. In this case, it did for some questions. Along with this, we did an online FluidSurvey and a written one to hand out so that people could write their answers.

Here are some quotes from the online survey we did:

'The underwater shots fitted nicely with the flow of the video'

'I like that the diving shots are in sync with the beat'

'The performance parts were great and the acting was good'

'Enjoyed it, good editing skills'

'I liked the reverse swimming shots'

'I liked the setting of the beach and the vintage look of the video and how it smoothly flows'

These are some of the more negative/constructive comments we received:

'The other band members should have had more screen time'

'didn't really like the reverse shots'

'a few shots were too long'

'Bit bland, didn't have a clear narrative or genre of video'

These were the questions we asked for our anonymous surveys, along with the answers:

Evaluation Questions

We sat as a group and decided who would do what question and how we would go about answering them. I am in charge of answering "How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?" I plan to use a Prezi to answer my question.

Production Diary

Lesson 1
Whole group went off and chose 3 songs each that we would want our group to do. We would have to find the songs and then think of a music video idea that we would use.
Joe 3 songs: Bastille weight of living part II, tinie tempah and Ella Eyre someday and Ed Sheeran and Passenger no diggity.
Beth 3 songs: Bastille Weight of Living Part I, Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj remix, Charlie Wilson nobody to love
Emma's 3 songs
Lana del Rey, Lily Allen, ly kke li
Dreas 3 songs
Emma Blackery hey ya/ still into you mix aleyayen
Here are the artists that we had chosen and then we had a group meeting about why we thought each song was the best idea. We all had contrasting ideas so we needed other feedback on what we should do.

Lesson 2
whole group - this lesson was used to show our class our music video ideas and then we would recieve feedback on what ideas they thought were best because our group was unsure of what song we should go for because we all had contrasting ideas. The feedback that we received was that Emma and Beth's music videos had the strongest ideas but they liked the song that I had chosen because it could have a lot done to it. We were still unsure after the feedback so we had another group meeting about it.

Lesson 3
Joe - I have been reseraching music video directors to find out information on that, i feel like i couldve done a bit more but we are still tryingto sort out our song which is taking a while.
Beth - Beth has been producing her DJ set to GBHS Ultra. she is trying to mix the song but it is proving illustrious at the moment.
Emma- Was looking at the whole class feeedback on our 3 ideas.
Drea- Was doing album cover research.

Lesson 4
Joe and Emma went to find out if we could use the swimming pool for our video but we need to wait till Tuesday to find out about availability
Emma, Drea, Beth were looking at another song that we can use for our video because we didn't have a set idea on what we wanted to do. We have now decided on a remix of a Lana Del Rey song.

Lesson 5
Emma: is doing the timings for the song that we have chosen this is a key role as it will ensure that our lip sync is in time. It involves listening to the song we have chosen and write down the timings of what she is singing.
Drea: Andrea is redoing the album covers she is looking up typical covers from our genre and then getting ideas for what we think we can use for our album. She is also writing down information about the type of genre Lana Del Rey is.
Beth: Beth was helping Emma do some bits for the lyrics timings.
Joe: I was doing some blog work and then started to fill out the production diary for the last few sessions so that our group is kept up to date.

Lesson 6
Joe: created a twitter account for our band that we have created, we can put updates on there.
Beth: is doing a PowerPoint on all about the band how it was made and what songs etc that we are singing, it's an insight into our band.

Emma: is looking up about Camden for where we can go to film our music video. She has also been looking at band names and song names. We have settled on the name Hybrid Beauty.
Drea: has been looking up about what kind of outfits the band members would be wearing.

Lesson 7
Whole group: what we did as a whole group yesterday was we completed our whole group storyboard, this was done thoroughly the whole hour as we had a lot of frames to get through. We will try and stick to the storyboard as much as we can but we may try and do what comes naturally at times.
Lesson 8
Joe: I am looking up good level 4 videos that we can try and get ideas from for our group. I will evaluate what the groups done well and what they may have been able to improve on.
Drea: is creating another mood board for our group.
Emma and Beth: are creating questions on what the group can be asked for an interview.

Lesson 9
Joe and Beth: will be filming and writing up a script for the storyboard which will be completed today.
Drea and Emma: On a school art trip
Lesson 10
Group: we yesterday filmed Andrea interview so that people would get to know out band members better we then did a photo shoot after school to get pictures for things like our website etc
Lesson 11
Emma/Drea/Beth: have been editing the pictures of the group from last night so that they can be used on our social media sites etc and on our website
Joe: I have completed the video analysis of 3 videos that we think our good and what we think they haven't done so well because then we won't make the same mistakes as them in out video
Lesson 12 In this lesson we were in a group and gave each other feedback on what we thought we could be improving on and what we are good at in the group. We had to fill out a sheet for each memeber in our group.

Lesson 13
Joe :In this lesson I have been updaing my blog and making sure that it is up to date.
Emma: Has been doing work for our group presentation that we have to perform on Wednesday
Beth: Has been finishing the group website which takes a lot of time.

Lesson 14
Group: In this lesson we were all giving feedback to the other groups on how well there work was coming on and how they could improve it, this was a signal that we were at the halfway stage of the production. Our group showed our presentation and did a very good job in my opinion, we weren't asked any questions so we must have included everything that people were expecting to see.

Lesson 15
Today we were split away from our group and were told to do are own things, doing our blogs and lap charts etc.

Lesson 16 Group: In this lesson we were all giving feedback to the other groups on how well there work was coming on and how they could improve it, this was a signal that we were at the halfway stage of the production. Our group showed our presentation and did a very good job in my opinion, we weren't asked any questions so we must have included everything that people were expecting to see.

Lesson 17
Today we were split away from our group and were told to do are own things, doing our blogs and lap charts etc.

Lesson 18
This lesson we had a man come in from outside school and he told us what he thought of our blogs and music video that we had already he would tell us what we could improve etc. I found this helpful as he mentioned quite a few things that our group should try and steer away from.

Lesson 19
In this lesson we did blog work individually, and also we had a meeting on what things we wanted to film with the GoPro because we were going to Riverside swimming pool to film our underwater shots. I also filled in a risk assessment on things that may go wrong at the pool and what dangers we may encounter etc.

Lesson 20
Beth and Emma: Were looking at the footage that we got from last night and are sorting it out into stuff that we can keep and things that we cant.
Joe: I am then going to get the images from the shoot and then say what went well and what we coul've done better.

Lesson 21
Joe: Is doing a new website design to see what it looks like and see if I can play around designs to suit our band the best.
Beth: Is editing our work that we have got filmed so we can have our video nearly finished
Drea and Emma: They are currently making a video production with lots of music videos all mixed into our song and it will explain all of the elements that we wanted in our actual production.

Lesson 22
Joe: In this lesson I wrote out the leter that we will send of to our artists Music Record Label.
Beth: Was doing more editing for our final piece.

Lesson 23Beth: Is doing more editing of the final peice.
Emma: Is finishing with her synematic that she has made and the going to help beth with the editing.
Joe: I am starting my synematic today and will have another look at our website.

Lesson 24
In this lesson we did a lot of individual blog work, a few of our team members were not in so we weren't able to do many major group tasks.

Lesson 25
Once again we had people missing from the group.
Joe: I was getting on with creating an audience presentation on a website called powtoon.
Drea: Was doing work on the digi pack and creating the drawings for the draft of the piece.

Lesson 26
In this lesson we were all having a look at the editing and playing around with different filters which we can include into the actual final piece. We wanted to make the video look more interesting than just the normal shots that we had and we tried to keep a continuity between the shots from the swimming pool, in which we used a more grainy effect, and the Southend pictures we put more colourful effects on to make the scenery look more appealable because on the day that we went the weather was very dark and gloomy.

Lesson 27
In this lesson we had a team meeting and decided that due to the fact that not many people had been in recently we needed to regroup and think about what we were going to do to get ourselves back on track and completing tasks.

- Everyone have a go at editing (All of us)

- Digipak planning/name of album (Beth)

- Another photoshoot (monday) All wear black, in the recording studio with instruments. (All of us)

- Work on website/wix (Joe?)

- Article - Radar NME (Joe)

Lesson 28
Drea: In this lesson Drea was looking at magazine articles from NME in order for us to be able to create a template which we can use for our own one for our band. We wanted to have a look at bands who were similar in stature to ours, relatively new on the scene and see what was written about them.
Beth and Emma: They were both working on completing the video editing which is coming on really well now, we just need to film some more cutaway shots to fill in the extra gaps that we have.
Joe: I was doing some Digipak planning, just to get some group ideas together so that we have a number of different options that we could look through and explore.

Lesson 29
Drea: In this lesson Drea finished the digipak plan and included what would be shown on each part of it.
Emma: had been working on the teaser trailer for out latest song black beauty.
Beth: was completing work for our institution.
Joe: In this lesson I was having a look at our website and trying to add some bits too it in order to make it look more professional.

Lesson 30
Group: In this lesson we decided too have a photo shoot using the green screen in the classroom so we could use them for either our digipak or for our group website.

Lesson 31
Joe: I have been doing the magazine article for our group after looking at the NME Radar articles.
Group: We then went off into the music block and went into one of the studios to film some cutaway shots that we can include into our video. We just had some simple silly shots of the group messing around and having a laugh.

Lessson 32
Group: In this lesson we filmed some more shots and we did it in the drama studio. We used some of the staging lights to make it look more of a performance based part to the video rather than all narative.

Lesson 33
Joe: In this I created a youtube account for our actual band Hybrid Beauty so that we can now uload it to our official youtube page rather than our own youtube accounts.
Emma: She was doing work on the editing.
Drea: Was doing work on looking at posters for our band and giving good analysis on why they are good and what they are showing.

Lesson 34
Joe: In this lesson I redone the shooting schedule as it was not accurate the one that we previously had on their so I had to change it.
Emma: Was on the wix website doing more for that to get it looking good and complete in time.
Beth: Created an Instagram account for the group where we will now be uploading pictures for our fans to see.

Lesson 35
Joe: I completed the shooting schedule for what we did at Southend Beach
Beth: Finished her digipack design which looks really good.
Drea: Was looking at audience feedback and was making a presentation on this
Emma: Was continuing on the editing of the piece

Lesson 36
Beth, Drea, Emma: they were all taking part in our group photoshoot because we needed images in order to put them on our group website etc.
Joe: In this lesson i was starting to make changes to the Radar article to make it fit more to the original design of the piece to make it look professional.

Lesson 37
Joe: have started doing the shooting schedule for when we went to the riverside swimming pool
Beth: Was doing work on the final digipack design
Emma: Was continuing to do work on the editing which is nearly finished
Drea: Was doing poster inspiration analysis which looks really good

Lesson 38
Joe: have been doing my own digipack in order to see if i could change it to fit what our feedback was. I then showed it to the rest of the group and we decided to take some parts from my digipack and put it onto the current one that we had.

Drea: Has been looking at the website on a mobile site. This will allow people to view of website on the go.
Beth and Emma: They have been both working on finishing the final draft for our music video which is now almost complete apart from a few slight changes that may need to be made.

Lesson 39
Group: In this lesson we have all been doing our own bits to help improve our blogs.

Lesson 40:
Joe: created a photo bucket account in which I added images from the group showing our social media bits and other construction bits.
Drea: done blog work and made a photobucket account and made albums for the blog.

Black Beauty Music Video

This is the final version of our music video. We reordered some of the shots, and changed the filters, to create a slightly more carefree and relaxed vibe to the video.

Peer Review on our Music Video

Music Video Release Hype

We planned to release the Black Beauty Music Video along with our coursework deadline. Here we've promoted the new music video on a range of social media sites; YouTube, Instagram, & Twitter.

Website; Final Construction

We corrected some typos throughout our website, and added strikethroughs on our tour page to indicate the date having passed. I also re-sized different images on the Gallery Page, to draw more attention to different ones.

Website; Mobile Site

While making the website, we decided to also make mobile site to make the website more accessible. This is what the different features look like.

Digipak; Final Draft

This is our final outcome for our band's digipak. Since the last draft, I reworded the 'special thanks' message, and also added a space nebula background to it, based on Joe's initial digipak idea. We thought this would be great to incorporate into our design, as it added depth to the digipak, and also helps us differentiate between each panel.

Hybrid Beauty Bloopers

We made a blooper reel for our music video shoot, much like the ones that mainstream bands and artists release after a new music video release.

First Draft Friday Feedback; Year 13

Feedback we received:
  • Some people were confused about the part Beth and Drea played in the band
  • Some people didn't like the studio shots
  • Others said get rid of the black and white

Changes we will make:
  • We are going to include more shots of Beth and Drea playing instruments to make it clearer we are musicians and producers and shout about our producing skills on the blog
  • We will replace the above shots with some of the studio shots
  • We have already played around with the colours of the video and gotten rid of some black and white (see below second draft post)

Overall feeling:
  • Great lip syncing comments
  • Looks professional
  • Editing goes with the beat of the music
  • Loved underwater shots
  • Good locations
  • Great range of locations
  • Visuals suit the music
  • Good use of shots and angles
  • Underwater shots in reverse are effective

Digipak: Fifth Design

We further improved our digipak by filling empty spaces on our top middle panel, and adding a barcode on our back cover.

We plan to take inspiration from Joe's digipak idea to create texture for the background panel.

Digipak: Fourth Design

After reflecting on our digipak feedback, we have made the following changes:
  • We have changed the CD design so it looks a bit more modern and professional, it also ties in with the water theme we have chosen in our music video
  • We have taken our peers advice and chosen to create a lyric page instead of having two image pages. The same font is used on the lyric page as on the rest of the digipak: alpaca solidify
  • We have changed the words on the special thanks page so it isn't as long winded and goes with our Hybrid Beauty theme
  • The individual pages for the digipak and the album covers/CDs now fit much better into their individual squares so it looks more professional and is more likely to be bought in shops by fans

We decided, based on feedback we've received that we need to add an image on the lyrics page, as it looks too empty, and that we need to add a barcode on the back cover, to make it look more realistic as an actual album.

Black Beauty Music Video; Second Draft

After feedback we received from the original first draft, we have made the following changes:

  • We have gotten rid of most of the black and white effects and played around with the colours of the beach shots using the RGB curves colour editor in premier. We have found that this looks much better and the beautiful weather on the day is highlighted
  • We have also gotten rid of the noise grain effect on the pool shots and made the blue stand out much more using the RGB curves colour editor in premiere. This looks much better, the shots stand out more and the blue looks effective
  • We have included more shots of Beth and Drea producing the track in a music room a little more and more shots of all three of us to make it clearer we are producers and musicians in the girl band not main vocalists

Digipak Feedback: Group Meeting

After receiving our peer feedback on our digipak, we decided to not change it too much. Due to our very mixed reviews, we realised there was no point in changing the band's image, as we were already projecting Hybrid Beauty how we wanted to. In the end we decided to change the boxes so that they line up together better, as to look more professional. We also decided to change the font on the slanting text, as it looks "too Microsoft word"

Digipak Peer Feedback

Love the photograph where you're on the stairs, its so professional, the black and white theme is nice, not sure about the text, it looks a bit microsoft wordy

I think there is far to much going on in most of the squares in this didgipack. I think there is alot to much to look at so if someone was looking at it in a shop they would not read all of it.

Good varioty of pictures, introduces the band well. Could add colour similar to music video.

WWW: Great Hybrid Beauty Font! Great quality photos, perfect special thanks page and cool picture page. EBI: You lose the black and white like you did in the video. Remove the slanted on 'hybrid beauty'. Difficult to read some of the song names because of hair. CD is basic but effective but would be better if it wasn't on a black background. Special thanks page is brilliant don't change unless adding colour!
12/1/2014 11:47 PM View respondent's answers

As said above, I really like Hybrid Beauty's digipak as the colour scheme is brilliant and it really establishes the identity of a 3 piece group;
12/1/2014 3:10 PM View respondent's answers

The hybrid beauty digipak also uses a lot of pictures. All the pictures look professional. A lot of people have used a black and white background, maybe use colour? The fonts and the pictures go well with the with the rest of the digipak. Over all the layout is really good and it all goes well together.
12/1/2014 3:09 PM View respondent's answers

Middle panel on the top - not loving this font and style. The CD isn't too strong either, overlay a semi transparent image of the band in B&W to create stronger imagery, and the blue link doesn't work - try making it a mid-grey to complete the colour scheme. Overall, though, the layout is great, and goes with the conventions of the genre!

flawless.
12/1/2014 1:54 PM View respondent's answers

I like the fonts that have been used as they are very individual. There isn't much colour which means the digipak doesn't stand out. The lack of colour doesn't go with the artists genre.
12/1/2014 12:34 PM View respondent's answers

i like the digipack but it feels very busy, maybe calming it down will help.
12/1/2014 12:26 PM View respondent's answers

Maybe add in a lyrics page rather than 2 pages of pictures.
12/1/2014 12:13 PM View respondent's answers

i like the black and white theme i think there could be more writing and less pictures
12/1/2014 11:48 AM View respondent's answers

White text on white background makes it hard to read Copied me for the download thing, copyrighted it Font looks strange with blocks instead of gaps in o's
12/1/2014 11:46 AM View respondent's answers

Fun layout, girly vibe. Black and white a bit boring? 'Special Thanks' page looks cheesy
11/30/2014 8:50 PM View respondent's answers

i'm confused as to what the album name is as there is only the band name on it - does this mean it is self-titled or am i missing it? i like the black and white colour scheme and the use of the pictures throughout. the fonts and colours link together on each section and the 'special thanks' is a cute addition.
11/30/2014 1:56 PM View respondent's answers

Good theme with black and white, interesting digipak pages. Improvement: make it fit a bit better into the boxes so it looks more professional
11/30/2014 12:38 PM View respondent's answers

Most people seem to think that our digipak is over-busy, however most people also seem to think that it's too monochromatic, and that we've used too many pictures. However, a few people think it's pretty good as it is, with minor changes needed. Due to the mixed response, I think we should have a group meeting, so we can discuss the feedback together.
