Music Video Analysis

This music video is very simple, and is performance and narrative, and uses a few effects, such as lens flares, filters, and slow motion. The song is quite slow, and matches the pace the music video, as it uses fewer shots than the average music video, but, despite this, it is effective with the song's style.

Video Inspiration

This video from the film 'Submarine' is a good example of the idea I had. The whole concept of the vintage filter and a couple spending the day on the beach. The couple would look different in terms of appearance and clothing to make it fit our original idea. The setting may also change as we wanted to have the couple in maybe Camden as the scenery fits the characters more. In terms of the way to camera shots look, that is what we hope to capture. As a group we will watch YouTube videos and work out how to add the vintage, grainy filter over the top.

The water idea came from this Beyoncé music video. We liked the idea of a girl being fully clothed but appearing like she’s drowning. We would hope to find maybe an old wedding dress from a charity shop, or maybe just a dress that will react well when I the water in order to get effective shots. We also like the idea of the girls makeup running down her face, almost helpless and lost in the flash backs. To film this we would need to use a go pro camera in order to get effective underwater shots with the fish eye effect.

Similar Genre Websites

Our influences came from multiple artists:

1) Lana Del Rey
- we have decided to do a remix of one her songs: 'Black Beauty' by Rex Riot and Ouros, therefore she is our influence.

Her website is quite vintage looking and focuses on the different moods and experiences she has. We could use these features in our artists website.

2) Beyonce - we are using her water-based ideas from 'Halo' as an influence for the water-based idea in our video.

Her website is quite artistic, and features pictures from her recent tour 'On the Run' with her husband Jay-Z. We could use these features in our artists website.

3) Submarine - there is a scene in the film 'Submarine' where they use a vintage filter effect and feature flash backs of 'happy couple' moments. This is something we want to feature in our music video.

Although the website of this is pretty unrelevant to influence our website as it is not a music video, it is quite helpful to see the way media websites are displayed.

Alternative Indie Album Covers

Alternative pop/rock is a catch-all term for post-punk musicians from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s. Artists such as R.E.M., Nina Nesbitt, Green Day, Norah Jones, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz and Ok Go. Nina Nesbitt and Norah Jones is especially similar to Lana Del Rey.
This is a range of album covers from the genre Alternative Indie, which our song is. The albums are very different; some feature the artist, either up close, or as a medium long shot or a long shot. Others feature abstracted surrealist images.
This is the album our song features on. It features a medium long shot of Del Rey with a black and white filter over the top. Her stage name is not featured on the album cover, and it only has the album name in white.

Song Change

After trying to mix together the 2 orginal songs we were going to use, we decided that it wasn't going to work as they are completly different.

We wanted to mix together 'I know you're Tired' by Charlie Wilson and 'Someday' by Tinie Tempah and Ella Eyre. After many attempts to have the female vocals from Someday as the chorus and the other song to play throughout, we decided that they didn't fit and that we needed to find a new song.

After listening to a range of songs that would still fit with our video concept, we decided to go with this Lana Del Rey remix as it still went with the music video plan. We didn't want to change our video ideas as we are happy with it.

Timetable of Group Free Periods

R&B Album Covers

R&B is a music genre that combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance. Prominent artists include Christina Aguilera, All Saints, Beyoncé and Emeli Sandé.
Album covers often feature a medium close up or, sometimes a close up of the recording artist. Backgrounds are often one colour or a very plain backdrop as not to distract from the artist. Font is not placed in one particular area or in any particular style or colour, but is often a motif for the artist that will recur on all of their merchandise. Font colour often coincides with the colours featured in the album art, but may stay the same throughout all of their merchandise, as another feature of the motif. Filters are also used in R&B album art, which makes the entire image greyscale, or tinted one colour.

The artist’s stance is often looking directly into the camera, with arms raised, to portray strength and stature. Another common stance is having the artist looking into the distance, off camera, with arms down, to portray a non-committal casualness, as if to make them look like they don’t have to try hard to look good on the album cover.

Demonstration and Love, Charlie are the albums in which our songs feature. Again, the album covers are fairly simplistic, and both have filters. In order for us to fit in with the genre of R&B, we will have to take all of these elements when making our album cover.

Potential Music Video Ideas

After we presented this to the rest of our class, they told us that they preferred Beth's and Joe's song choices, and Emma's concept.

We decided to remix Nobody To Love by Charlie Wilson and Someday (Place  in The Sun) by Tinie Tempah Ft. Ella Eyre to create a completely unique song.

It was suggested that we could use Beth's video concept of someone drowning and Emma's concept of a vintage couple in London. The concept is that The person drowning is dying and having flashbacks of their life.

3 Music Video Concept Ideas

Hey Ya x Stay the Night by Aeylaeyen
Main character is lip synching the song in a room alone, dancing, really into it. Throughout the song, people (guys and girls), fade one at a time into the scene, main sings to each of them, before fading out. Ends with main singing alone in the middle of room.

Dancing with other characters in instrumentals.

Mr C by Nina Nesbitt
Main coming into a house party, turning down one guys advances. Shots of performance throughout

Luka by Susanne Vega
Performance based. ‘Luka’ walking around her flat she shares with her partner singing throughout. Some performance in a studio, black backdrop
